I still can’t believe I am homeschooling. While I am a teacher’s kid and education is comfortable to me, this is a whole new ballgame. Since moving back to the US from Germany last summer, I feel like I have lived in a whirlwind. I started off in August basically freaking out on what to do with my son while trying to unpack my house. We had 3 different shipments come in so I never felt like I was unpacked until now. I had nothing but mommy guilt because I knew he wasn’t getting what he should. I finally cut myself a break when I found a tutoring program in our area, A Kid’s Choice Foundation, which has saved us on every level.
My son has ADHD and dyslexia. I am not afraid to say it. He can’t read on his grade level. He can’t spell. This is why I pulled him from public school which will be a whole other post. I would rather have a happy kid, then a miserable kid. Since he has dyslexia, he needs a specific reading program to help him read. A Kid’s Choice Foundation offers tutoring using the Wilson Language Program which is designed for dyslexics. Our first few months back in the states have been solely focused on getting my child to read. I have spent most of the rest of our time doing things together he is interested in until we get used to being home schooled.
Now that January is fast approaching, I wanted to have more of a solid plan on our school week with specific curriculum geared to helping him. Here is a breakdown of what I looking to do for him this semester.
Reading – Wilson Language & Learning Ally
Spelling – Touch-type, Read, & Spell
Writing – Handwriting Without Tears Cursive
Math – Teaching Textbooks & Times Tales
Science – Mystery Science & whatever he is interested in
History – We have traveled overseas quite a bit so we are breaking each of our trips down and learning about the history and geography of the different countries.
Extracurricular – We just joined a co-op! We will take 2-3 classes a week.
Do you homeschool? What are your favorite programs?
