Are you a Lego fan? This family loves Legos, even if I have stepped on my fair share. OUCH! My son, who is now 10, has a dream to visit Lego headquarters in Billund, Denmark. He is my Senior Lego Engineer. My daughter has followed in her big brother’s footsteps of loving these little bricks. I never grew up with Legos, but my husband did and he has shared his childhood pieces with our kids.
We first heard of Brickfair about 3 years ago. Brickfair is a Lego fair once a year in cities in Alabama, Virginia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. Since moving home from Europe, we promised my eldest that we would go to Brickfair. It also helped that we have family in the area, and it’s driving distance. Our friends were also showcasing their Lego work, so we wanted to go and show them our support.
I really didn’t know what to expect at Brickfair. I didn’t have any expectations except looking at Legos. It certainly was a pleasant surprise. There was so much to do! We got to see amazing Lego creations, as well as shop for Lego bricks, minifigs, sets, and much more. There were lots of kid friendly activities like Bingo, miniature golf, bounce houses, a building area, and some Lego car races to name a few. What I didn’t expect was to fall in love with Legos even more! There is so much more to Legos than building. For us, it’s part of our homeschool education. We do math with legos and build models. Legos are a part of our daily lives.
Did you know that The Lego Foundation invests in research and education? They have a free program called SIX BRICKS, which focuses on play based learning. They partner with universities all over the world like Cambridge, Tufts, MIT, and more. It’s hard not to love Lego!
Here are some of the magnificent Lego builds from Brickfair in Birmingham, Alabama. Our friends had our favorite builds out of the whole fair. They built a huge Quidditch arena from Harry Potter and an impressive Star Wars scene, called “The Trench Run”, where Luke Skywalker destroys the Death Star. You can follow his amazing builds on Instagram or Flickr. He was kind enough to share his photos with me. Doesn’t this totally blow your mind?!
Here are a few more builds from the Birmingham Brickfair. It’s an inspiring experience that is so much fun for kids and parents!
